Arcadis wins HS2 Birmingham depot design contract

Arcadis has secured a design and programme management contract for the Taylor Woodrow and Aureos Rail (TWA) consortium to support the development of the new HS2 rolling stock depot and the Network Integrated Control Centre (NICC) at Washwood Heath, Birmingham.HS2 Birmingham depot

The value of the contract awarded to Arcadis exceeds EUR 90 million.

Arcadis will act as design consultant to TWA, ensuring integrated project delivery, governance, risk management and technical support throughout the construction phase, in line with HS2 requirements.

“This contract will contribute to the regeneration of a neglected area of one of the United Kingdom’s major cities and will bring significant social benefits, including skilled jobs and economic development for the local community,” said Heather Polinsky, CEO of Arcadis.

A strategic rail hub for the HS2 Birmingham depot

The project represents one of the most significant investments in high-speed rail infrastructure in the United Kingdom and will support the operation of the future HS2 network.

In May, the consortium secured a EUR 991 million contract for the construction of the depot and associated facilities, forming a complex that will serve the high-speed train fleet.

The new Washwood Heath complex will become the sole dedicated depot for the maintenance and operation of the high-speed train fleet running on the London–Birmingham route, with potential for future expansion to other destinations across Great Britain. The 30-hectare site will include maintenance facilities, automated vehicle inspection systems, stabling sidings and a test track for high-speed trains.

During the construction phase, the project is expected to generate around 500 jobs, rising to approximately 1,000 permanent positions upon completion.

Washwood Heath will play a key role in ensuring the operation of the HS2 network, increasing rail capacity and supporting economic growth in regions served by the new high-speed services.

Works are due to begin immediately and are scheduled to continue until 2033.
