Alstom wins EUR 920 million train contract in Mexico

Alstom has secured a contract to supply 47 Adessia Stream DMUs for Mexico’s new railway corridors. The contract, awarded by the Mexican Rail Transport Regulatory Agency (ARTF), is valued at EUR 920 million and covers the production of 33 trains for long-distance services and 14 for short-distance routes.

In addition to supplying the 47 diesel units, the contract includes five years of full maintenance, equipping maintenance depots, inspection and refuelling stations, as well as technical training and commissioning of the trains.

Locally known as “Trenes del Norte” (Trains of the North), Alstom’s Adessia Stream trains will meet the highest international standards of modern mobility, reaching a maximum speed of approximately 165 km/h. Each unit will be about 100 metres long and capable of double coupling, forming configurations of up to eight cars. Passenger capacity will be flexible, accommodating around 300 passengers on long-distance services and up to 600 on short-distance routes, ensuring efficiency and comfort on every journey. The trains will provide a safe, contemporary and comfortable travel experience, with full accessibility for passengers with reduced mobility (PRM) and real-time passenger information systems.

“This project demonstrates Alstom’s commitment to Mexico. 76.6% of the train content will be manufactured in Mexico, boosting the Mexican railway industry, promoting technical expertise, and strengthening the local supplier network, creating quality jobs across the value chain,” said Maite Ramos, Managing Director of Alstom North America.

The Adessia Stream DMUs will be manufactured at Alstom’s Ciudad Sahagún plant in Hidalgo, which holds international certifications and advanced processes for stainless steel and aluminium fabrication, ensuring quality and efficiency at every stage of production.

The new Mexican railway corridors to be served by the ordered trains include Mexico City–Querétaro–Irapuato and Saltillo–Monterrey–Nuevo Laredo. This contract is part of the 2025–2030 National Development Plan and represents a major boost for passenger rail mobility in Mexico, connecting key regions in the central and northern parts of the country and supporting the relaunch of passenger rail services.
