Alstom wins contract for Mumbai Metro Line 4

Alstom has been awarded a major contract to supply 234 Metropolis metro cars, a Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling system, and five years of maintenance services for Mumbai Metro Line 4. The order, placed by Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T), is valued at several hundred million euros and further strengthens Alstom’s long-standing role in India’s urban mobility sector.

Mumbai Metro Line 4, also known as the Green Line, is a 35.3 km elevated corridor running from Wadala in Central Mumbai to Kasarvadavali in Thane. With 32 stations, it will be one of the city’s longest metro lines, providing essential connectivity to the Eastern Express Highway, Monorail and other Mumbai Metro routes.

The contract awarded to L&T by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) covers an integrated systems package including rolling stock, CBTC signalling and train control, telecommunications, platform screen doors, and depot equipment. L&T has partnered with Alstom to deliver the trains and signalling system, along with associated maintenance.

Expanding Mumbai’s Metro network

Alstom will deliver 39 fully driverless six-car Metropolis trainsets and its Urbalis Forward CBTC system, designed to increase line capacity, reduce travel time and improve energy efficiency. The company will also provide five years of maintenance services to ensure maximum availability and reliability.

Ling Fang, Region President, APAC, Alstom, said:

“We are honoured to be chosen for the prestigious Mumbai Metro Line 4 project, further strengthening our long-standing association with the city of Mumbai. Alstom-built trains and signalling solutions are already serving on other Mumbai Metro lines. This ambitious new project presents more opportunities for us to provide best-in-class solutions to commuters and contribute to elevating the financial capital’s infrastructure.”

Built under the ‘Make in India’ initiative

In line with India’s ‘Make in India’ programme, all trainsets will be designed and manufactured domestically:

  • Engineering and design will be carried out in Bangalore, Karnataka.
  • Manufacturing of the 234 cars will take place at Alstom’s Sri City facility in Andhra Pradesh, which has the capacity to produce 480 cars annually.
  • Propulsion systems will be built in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, and bogies at Savli, Gujarat.

Alstom’s Sri City site has a strong track record, having already delivered driverless trainsets for Mumbai’s Aqua Line, Delhi Metro Phase IV, Chennai Metro Phase II, as well as international projects in Montreal and Sydney.

Global and national expertise in CBTC

Alstom is recognised as a global leader in CBTC technology, with more than 30 years of expertise and a portfolio of 190 CBTC-equipped metro lines, of which over 90 are in commercial operation. In India, 18 metro lines are already using or preparing to use Alstom’s signalling solutions.

The company has played a key role in Mumbai’s metro development. Its driverless Metropolis trains already operate on the Aqua Line, now one of the country’s longest underground metro routes, carrying more than 1.6 million passengers per day. In addition, Alstom is supplying signalling and telecom solutions for Mumbai Metro Lines 2 and 7, and signalling systems for Lines 7A and 9.
