Alstom will implement the ETCS system in Queensland

Alstom has secured the first tranche, worth EUR 69 million (USD 114 million), of a EUR 214 million (USD 354 million) framework contract to install ETCS in Queensland as part of the first phase of The Wave program, a major project to modernize Australia’s rail infrastructure.

Under the contract, Alstom will design, supply, test, and commission the ONVIA Control ETCS Level 2 digital signaling system for Section 1 North of the new Sunshine Coast Line, helping to increase the capacity, safety, and reliability of the rail network.

The project also includes the integration of a 5G digital radio system provided by a designated third party, which will be coordinated and integrated by Alstom.

ETCS Level 2 for the 2032 Brisbane Olympics

The contract is part of the broader ETCS deployment program in Queensland, which aims to digitally transform the state’s rail network and prepare the infrastructure for the 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games.

“As Queensland prepares to host the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Alstom is proud to bring its global expertise in digital signaling to support the transformation of the state’s rail network. “This project combines globally proven ETCS technology with our strong presence in Queensland to support a safer, more efficient, and future-ready transport system,” said Guillaume Tritter, Managing Director of Alstom Australia and New Zealand.

Section 1 North represents a strategic investment for rail transport in southeastern Queensland, set to increase network capacity and improve service reliability on one of the region’s busiest rail corridors.

The ETCS system will be implemented on both new infrastructure sections and existing lines of The Wave project and the North Coast Line, which involves a complex integration without interrupting passenger train service.

In addition to technological modernization, the project will generate local economic and social benefits. Alstom will establish the Queensland Mobility Supply Chain Centre of Excellence, a center dedicated to skills development and the supply chain in the mobility sector. At the same time, the project will support job creation through apprenticeship programs, internships, and collaborations with schools and universities in Queensland, contributing to the training of the next generation of railway specialists.
