Alstom has partnered with Finnish stainless steel producer Outokumpu to source Circle Green, a stainless steel with up to 93% lower carbon emissions than the global industry average.

The material will be used in the outer layer of Alstom’s next-generation Metropolis metro trains, with the first deliveries scheduled for 2026.
The agreement supports Alstom’s target to reduce emissions from procured goods and services by 30% by 2030, part of its broader sustainability and eco-design strategy.
“Using stainless steel with lower carbon emissions will contribute to significantly reducing our CO₂ output,” said Véronique Andriès, Alstom’s VP for Sustainability and CSR.
Circle Green steel is produced with high recycled content and fossil-free electricity. For Outokumpu, the deal marks its largest-ever volume contract in the mobility sector and a key milestone in its own efforts to help decarbonise heavy industry.
“Europe needs frontrunner companies to drive the green transition forward. We’re excited to support Alstom’s decarbonisation journey,” said Rolf Schencking, President of Outokumpu’s Advanced Materials business line.
Alstom’s Metropolis platform is used globally in cities such as Paris, Singapore and Barcelona. The use of lower-emission materials is expected to further reduce the environmental footprint of urban rail systems as demand for sustainable transport infrastructure grows.
This agreement comes as rail manufacturers face mounting pressure to lower emissions not just from train operations but across the entire value chain — including materials, manufacturing, and procurement. Both companies describe this partnership as a model for future climate-conscious collaborations in European transport.
