Alstom to supply propulsion systems for 435 NYC Subway cars

Alstom has confirmed it will supply propulsion components for 435 additional R211 subway cars for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s (MTA) New York City Transit (NYCT), under its second exercised option with Kawasaki Rail Car Inc. The order supports the ongoing modernisation of one of the world’s largest urban transit systems.

The agreement, announced on 22 July, is part of NYCT’s broader initiative to improve service reliability and fleet performance. Alstom’s propulsion equipment has already been integrated into earlier deliveries of R211 cars, and this new batch will bring the total number of Alstom-equipped vehicles to 1,610—covering over 80% of NYCT’s subway fleet upon completion.

Manufactured in New York State

All propulsion components for the additional R211 cars will be manufactured at Alstom’s facility in Hornell, New York. The Hornell site, recognised as the largest passenger rail manufacturing facility in the United States, houses the company’s component plant and power laboratory. It is responsible for the production of AC traction motors, traction cases, and high-speed circuit breakers (HSCBs), and includes testing infrastructure to validate the components on-site.

This localised approach ensures a high level of quality control and reliability, while also contributing to domestic rail manufacturing and job retention in upstate New York.

A long-term partnership with NYCT

The R211 car series forms a key part of NYCT’s rolling stock renewal strategy. These modern vehicles feature wider doors, open gangways in some configurations, and updated digital displays, all aimed at improving passenger flow and travel information.

“Alstom is thrilled to build on our proven track record of delivering cutting-edge components that enhance the reliability and efficiency of urban transit systems,” said Michael Keroullé, President of Alstom Americas. “With the exercise of this second option, more than 80% of the New York City Transit fleet will be equipped with Alstom’s propulsion system, helping trains keep millions of passengers moving to their destinations.”

Alstom’s work in North America spans numerous urban transit projects, including significant rail and metro contracts in cities such as Chicago, Los Angeles, Montreal and Washington, D.C. Its long-standing relationship with the MTA includes propulsion and signalling systems as well as car refurbishment.

Supporting New York’s transit modernisation

The R211 contract is a vital part of MTA’s capital programme, which seeks to enhance reliability and customer experience across the subway network.

The first R211s entered service in 2023, and subsequent deliveries continue to bolster NYCT’s ability to meet growing ridership demands while supporting sustainability targets.
