Alstom to supply 30 Traxx locomotives to Slovenia

Alstom has signed a contract with SŽ – Tovorni promet (Slovenian Railways – Freight Transport) for the supply of 30 Traxx Universal multisystem electric locomotives, valued at more than EUR 150 million. These locomotives will be deployed for freight operations across Slovenia, Germany, Austria, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, and Serbia.

“Alstom’s state-of-the-art electric locomotives will significantly contribute to Slovenia’s transition towards sustainable mobility. The new locomotives will enhance freight operations through improved energy efficiency and ease of maintenance. This order also strengthens Alstom’s presence in Central and Eastern Europe,” said Frederique Kalb, Alstom’s Managing Director for Central and Eastern Europe.

The locomotives will feature Alstom’s Onvia Cab, an advanced ERTMS (European Rail Traffic Management System) onboard signalling solution that enhances efficiency, safety, and interoperability across borders. Designed for heavy freight transport, these Traxx locomotives will operate alongside Slovenian Railways’ existing fleet to improve rail logistics in the region.

The Traxx Universal locomotives are based on a modular platform, allowing flexibility for both freight and passenger transport across multiple countries. Available in AC, DC, and multi-system configurations, the locomotives offer increased operational efficiency, reliability, and extended maintenance intervals, leading to improved availability for freight operators.

Since 2000, over 6,000 Alstom locomotives have been ordered for use in Europe, Asia, North America, and Africa. Alstom is also a leading provider of locomotive maintenance, servicing over 2,450 locomotives globally, including nearly 600 Traxx locomotives. In the field of ERTMS technology, Alstom has supplied 70% of Europe’s equipped trains and installed over 25,000 onboard units across more than 200 vehicle types worldwide.
