Alstom has secured a significant new order from SNCF Voyageurs to supply 96 additional RER NG trainsets for the RER D line in Île-de-France. The contract, valued at approximately EUR 1.7 billion, follows the approval of a financing agreement by the Île-de-France Mobilités Board of Directors on 10 April 2025.

This order is fully funded by Île-de-France Mobilités and is part of the long-term framework agreement signed with Alstom in 2017. It brings the total number of RER NG trainsets ordered to 262—comprising 130 shorter units for the RER E line and 132 longer units for the RER D line.
Frédéric Wiscart, President of Alstom France, said: “Alstom is delighted with this announcement, which confirms the confidence of Île-de-France Mobilités and SNCF Voyageurs in this new and innovative rolling stock, designed and assembled at our Valenciennes and Crespin sites, in the North of France.”
RER NG: Designed for capacity and accessibility
The RER NG (Nouvelle Génération) is a double-decker electric multiple unit developed to modernise operations on the RER D and E lines. The train features a blend of single- and double-deck cars with an open ‘boa-style’ design to improve capacity, speed up passenger flow, and enhance accessibility. The end cars provide level boarding platforms for passengers in wheelchairs.
Each seven-car train for the RER D line measures 130 metres in length and offers 1,861 spaces, including 606 seated, tailored to accommodate the region’s dense commuter traffic.
Enhanced comfort and passenger experience
Designed with passenger comfort in mind, RER NG trains are fitted with air conditioning, USB charging ports, LED lighting tailored to different times of day, and large digital information screens. Seats and interiors are developed with ergonomic standards for commuter comfort.
Drawing on Alstom’s urban and suburban mobility technologies, the RER NG is engineered for high reliability and efficiency. With a top speed of 140 km/h, the trains feature advanced traction systems that deliver superior acceleration and braking performance, making them well suited to busy commuter corridors.
Each train is equipped with 54 CCTV cameras, 54 information screens, over 310 USB ports, and more than 320 kilometres of cabling.
Manufacturing and delivery milestones
The new rolling stock is being assembled at Alstom’s facilities in Valenciennes-Petite Forêt and Crespin, with component production supported by other French sites, including Tarbes, Le Creusot, Petit-Quevilly, Ornans, and Villeurbanne. Design activities are based at Alstom’s Saint-Ouen facility.
The RER NG trains began passenger service on the RER E line in November 2023 and on the RER D line in December 2024. With this latest order, full fleet renewal on the RER D line is now under way.
