Alstom reveals new Traxx locomotive for Romania

Alstom has revealed the design of the Traxx Universal electric locomotive for the Romanian Railway Reform Authority (ARF), marking a key milestone in the 2024 contract for 16 locomotives and 20 years of maintenance.

The first unit has arrived in Romania and entered dynamic testing at the Faurei Testing Centre this August, ahead of further trials in Germany on TSI-certified lines. Initially presented in a temporary blue protective livery, the locomotives will receive their final dark red coating after testing.

With a maximum speed of 200 km/h and the capacity to haul up to 16 passenger cars, the four-axle locomotives feature Alstom’s state-of-the-art ERTMS onboard system for efficiency, safety, and full interoperability.

“We are proud to see the first Traxx Universal locomotive for ARF entering testing on schedule. This is a significant step forward in our commitment to delivering high-performance, sustainable mobility solutions for Romania,” said Gabriel Stanciu, Managing Director Alstom Romania, Bulgaria and Moldova. “The new locomotives will bring a major boost to the country’s sustainable rail transport capabilities, both in terms of speed and reliability.”

Deliveries are set to begin in the first half of 2026, with the maintenance term extendable by an additional 20 years.

More than 3,000 Traxx locomotives have been sold since 2000, operating in 20 countries and covering over 300 million kilometres annually.
