A consortium led by Alstom, which also includes Rowad Modern Engineering and Concrete Plus, has signed four major contracts with the Egyptian National Railways (ENR) to modernize strategic rail corridors in Egypt.
The total value of the contracts amounts to EUR 690 million, of which EUR 300 million will go to Alstom.
The projects focus on the railway corridor between 6 October City and Alexandria, as well as the Belbes–10th of Ramadan (B10) line—two essential routes for freight transport and the country’s logistics development.
The largest of these projects is the modernization of the 6 October–Alexandria corridor, valued at EUR 550 million, of which EUR 240 million is Alstom’s share. The work will be carried out in three major phases and includes the introduction of state-of-the-art digital railway systems, the modernization of telecommunications, the strengthening of the power supply infrastructure, and the complete rehabilitation of the railway infrastructure.
These investments will help increase traffic safety, boost transport capacity, and improve operational reliability, while also reducing travel time along the entire route by nearly 80 minutes.
The Belbes–10th of Ramadan line, with an estimated value of EUR 140 million, will benefit from the same modern technologies and will improve access to one of Egypt’s most important industrial zones. The authorities and partners involved estimate that the project will streamline freight transport and support the economic development of the logistics corridor in the eastern part of the country.
Modern Corridors for Logistics and Industry
By modernizing the connections between the 6 October inland port and the Port of Alexandria, as well as by improving rail access to the 10th of Ramadan industrial zone, these projects will strengthen the links between Egypt’s main logistics hubs and its seaports.
The new investments are designed to reduce bottlenecks in supply chains, encourage the shift of freight to rail transport, and support the growth of trade at the national and regional levels.
As the consortium leader, Alstom will be responsible for the design, engineering, supply, testing, and commissioning of the new digital rail systems. The solutions to be implemented will include the installation of the ETCS Level 1 system, modern telecommunications networks, modernized power infrastructure, and advanced operational control systems, which will enable real-time traffic management along the entire route.
At the same time, Rowad Modern Engineering and Concrete Plus will construct the technical buildings, electromechanical installations, and infrastructure and superstructure works necessary for the development of modern and resilient rail corridors. The projects also have a significant local component, with approximately 50% of their value to be delivered through the involvement of Egyptian specialists and suppliers.
The development of these strategic railway corridors in Egypt is part of the national Vision 2030 program and aims to improve connectivity between seaports, inland ports, and the country’s main industrial areas.
