Alstom has secured an extension to its contract for the maintenance of the Västtågen train fleet operated by Statens Järnvägar (SJ) in Sweden.
Västtrafik, the authority responsible for public transport in western Sweden, has awarded SJ the new contract to operate the Västtågen train fleet. Under the contract, Alstom will continue to be SJ’s local partner for rolling stock maintenance, based on an agreement valued at just under €200 million. The company is thus contributing to the provision of safe, reliable, and high-quality rail services for passengers in the region.
“This contract confirms the commitment and quality that characterizes our work. Together with Alstom, we have built a solid and long-lasting partnership that creates stable conditions for the further development of Västtågen’s services and for the provision of reliable transport services for passengers,” said Helena Isaksson, CEO of SJ Götalandståg, a subsidiary of SJ.
The 11-year maintenance agreement will start in December 2027. The contract involves extensive maintenance responsibility, now including major maintenance of vehicles and components, as well as a strong focus on the development and implementation of Alstom’s digital maintenance solutions.
The preparation phase is now starting and will last for approximately 20 months. The long-term nature of the contract provides a solid basis for the continued development of Alstom’s Maintenance Performance Center in Gothenburg. With its specialized expertise and advanced technical capabilities, the center supports the company’s entire maintenance activity in the region.
Västtågen trains operate in western Sweden
The Västtågen train fleet operates on regional lines in western Sweden, particularly in the Västra Götaland County region and neighboring areas. Sweden’s western network connects major cities such as Gothenburg, Borås, Skövde, Trollhättan, and Uddevalla and is integrated into the regional public transport system managed by Västtrafik. The trains are operated by SJ Götalandståg, a subsidiary of the national railway operator Statens Järnvägar (SJ).
SJ Götalandståg has been operating Västtågen services since 2012, and Alstom has been responsible for maintaining the rolling stock of this train fleet for more than a decade. For Alstom, this contract demonstrates its ongoing commitment to sustainable mobility, operational excellence, and the development of expertise in Sweden, as well as its support for both existing rolling stock fleets and the introduction of new trains, which the company will deliver during the contract period.
“We are very pleased to have been entrusted once again with the responsibility for the maintenance and development of the Västtågen train fleet, which is the result of our strong collaboration with SJ. Thanks to our technicians, all the employees involved in these activities, and the consistently high level of service provided, we have strengthened our position in the region,” said Mikael Granberg, responsible for rolling stock maintenance in the Nordic region at Alstom.
Another maintenance contract won by Alstom in Sweden was signed in October for Mälartåg trains operating in the Stockholm metropolitan area.
