The Alstom Group has completed delivery of the core order of Innovia APM R vehicles for the automated transport system at Denver International Airport (DEN), marking a new milestone in the modernization of the internal transport network of one of the busiest airports in the United States.
The last vehicle delivered is part of an initial order of 26 units, intended to replace and modernize the airport’s Automated Guideway Transit System (AGTS) fleet.
The first Innovia APM R trains entered service in 2024, and 24 vehicles are already in service.
Fleet expansion and capacity increase
In addition to the basic order, Denver Airport placed an additional order for 19 vehicles last year, which will allow for the complete replacement of the original 31 units and the expansion of the total fleet to 45 vehicles.
With the introduction of the new trains, the system’s capacity has increased by approximately 1,700 passengers per hour, and the interval between trains has been reduced in the context of continuous growth in passenger traffic.
The airport’s automated transport system serves over 150,000 users daily, connecting the terminals and boarding areas.
Energy efficiency and sustainability
The new Innovia APM R vehicles feature lightweight aluminum bodies made from recyclable materials and a more efficient power supply system that reduces energy consumption by over 30% compared to the previous generation.
According to Alstom, these features contribute to both increased operational performance and the achievement of the airport’s sustainability goals.
The vehicles were manufactured and tested at Alstom’s facility in West Mifflin, Pennsylvania, the company’s global center for automated people mover systems, where similar trains are produced for airports and urban networks around the world.
Long-term operation and maintenance
Alstom has been operating and maintaining Denver Airport’s AGTS system since its inauguration in 1995. In November 2024, the airport signed a new seven-year operation and maintenance contract, valid for the period 2025–2032.
The Alstom team in Denver consists of 101 employees who ensure the system operates 24/7.
