Trenitalia (Gruppo FS Italiane) and Alstom have unveiled a new Coradia Stream regional train capable of reaching 200 km/h at the opening of Expo Ferroviaria 2025 in Milan. The new trains will enter service in Tuscany, Lazio, and Umbria, representing a major step forward in modernising Italy’s regional transport network.

Designed and manufactured in Italy at Alstom’s Savigliano, Sesto San Giovanni, and Bologna sites, the new fleet highlights the importance of the domestic rail supply chain and Italian engineering expertise.
Key features of the train
The eight-carriage train can carry up to 1,076 passengers, including 618 seated, and offers barrier-free access with automatic boarding ramps. Interiors have been designed for passenger comfort, with quiet environments, next-generation seating, and advanced climate control.
Sustainability is a central focus: more than 96% of materials are recyclable, while energy-efficient systems allow up to 35% savings in consumption. The train also provides 16 dedicated bicycle spaces, including for e-bikes.
From a technological standpoint, the train integrates ERTMS signalling, a full Ethernet TCMS with predictive diagnostics, and safety features such as automatic fire detection and fire-retardant materials.
Strategic Investment in fleet renewal
The launch is part of Trenitalia’s broader EUR 7 billion fleet renewal plan, aimed at replacing 80% of its regional trains by 2027. The programme will see the introduction of 1,061 new trains, building on the 931 next-generation units already in operation.
Every day, Trenitalia’s Regionale division carries more than 400 million passengers annually across 6,000 daily trips serving 1,700 destinations.
Gianpiero Strisciuglio, CEO and General Manager of Trenitalia, said:
“The new 200 km/h regional train represents a crucial step in the transformation and renewal of the fleet that Trenitalia and the FS Group are carrying out. This process, which goes hand in hand with the renewal of the high-speed and Intercity fleet, is the result of a total investment of EUR 7 billion, which will enable 80% of the regional fleet to be renewed by 2027. Trenitalia is committed to providing state-of-the-art trains that are not only modern and comfortable, but above all sustainable, capable of connecting territories and communities, promoting more efficient, accessible, and environmentally friendly mobility.”
Strengthening Italy’s rail industry
Alstom emphasised the train’s domestic production as an example of industrial excellence and its contribution to strengthening Italy’s role in the European rail supply chain.
Michele Viale, Managing Director of Alstom Italy, commented:
“We are proud to present this new Coradia Stream together with Trenitalia, a train entirely designed and built in Italy that showcases the excellence of our industrial expertise. With this next-generation train, we continue our tangible contribution to modernizing regional mobility, offering passengers a faster, more comfortable, and sustainable travel experience. This project reflects our commitment to strengthening the Italian rail supply chain and supporting the development of the regions where we operate.”
The new trains are part of the Coradia Stream family, Alstom’s highly flexible platform with more than 800 units sold across Europe. The platform serves regional, interregional, cross-border, and intercity routes, combining modularity with efficiency.
By introducing these new trains, Trenitalia and Alstom aim to deliver a faster, greener, and more reliable regional service, reinforcing Italy’s commitment to sustainable transport and integrated mobility.
