Alpha Trains orders another 25 Stadler Euro6000 locomotives

Alpha Trains and Stadler have signed a new contract for 25 Euro6000 multi-system electric locomotives, with delivery scheduled for 2028. The order will bring Alpha Trains’ Euro6000 fleet to 92 locomotives and aims to strengthen rail freight transport in Spain and along the Mediterranean Corridor.

Stadler and Alpha Trains, one of Europe’s leading private owners of locomotives and leased trains, have signed a new contract for the delivery of 25 Euro6000 multi-system electric locomotives.

The new locomotives will be delivered in 2028 and represent a strategic investment for the Iberian and European rail markets.

The contract continues the long-standing collaboration between Alpha Trains and Stadler Valencia, under which more than 150 locomotives have been ordered since 2007.

With this order, Alpha Trains’ Euro6000 fleet will grow to 92 locomotives.

Locomotives for Spain and the Mediterranean Corridor

The order includes several configurations.

Some of the locomotives will be delivered for Iberian gauge and are intended for rail freight transport in Spain. Alpha Trains states that the investment supports the development of modern Spanish logistics, based on high-performance, high-capacity vehicles.

Other Euro6000 locomotives will be built for UIC standard gauge and are designed to operate on the Mediterranean Corridor.

According to the companies, these locomotives are the only ones capable of providing a direct, seamless connection between Spain, France, Belgium, and Luxembourg.

The Mediterranean Corridor is part of the trans-European transport network TEN-T and plays an important role in shifting freight from road to rail and in developing less polluting logistics in Europe.

Over 2,000 metric tons on challenging routes

The Euro6000 locomotive has 6 axles and a power output of 6 MW, and is designed for heavy freight trains.

According to Stadler and Alpha Trains, a single Euro6000 locomotive can haul trains weighing over 2,000 metric tons on routes with steep gradients while maintaining operating speed.

Its multi-system capability allows for cross-border operation on both conventional networks and new infrastructure, which is essential for freight traffic between the Iberian Peninsula and the rest of Europe.

“The only proven solution connecting Spain to Northern Europe”

Vincent Pouyet, CEO of Alpha Trains Locomotives, stated that the new order goes beyond a simple fleet expansion.

“This order is more than just an expansion of our fleet; it is a commitment to the strategic development of rail freight transport in Spain and along the Mediterranean Corridor.

With our Euro6000, locomotives, we offer the market the only proven solution that directly connects Spain with Northern Europe. This significantly increases efficiency for our customers,” said Vincent Pouyet.

Iñigo Parra, CEO of Stadler Valencia, stated that the new contract reinforces the role of rail freight in connecting Europe.

“This contract reinforces the strategic role of rail freight in connecting Europe. By delivering Euro6000 electric locomotives for use both on the Iberian Peninsula and along the corridor between Spain and the North Sea, we are paving the way for a new era of high-capacity, low-emission cross-border logistics. This is about building the backbone of a resilient, future-ready supply chain in Europe,” said Iñigo Parra.
