Almería rail integration progress according to schedule

Spain’s Secretary of State for Transport and Sustainable Mobility, José Antonio Santano, announced that works for the Almería rail integration are progressing according to schedule and represent a major milestone in the development of high-speed rail in the region.

Almería rail integration

During a visit to Almería station, where he reviewed the progress of the works, Santano emphasised that the integration of the railway into the city will pave the way for high-speed services, transforming the station into an intermodal hub and further embedding the railway within the urban fabric.

This second phase of the Almería rail integration includes the construction of a 1.9 km tunnel from the already completed El Puche tunnel to Avenida del Mediterráneo, featuring two tracks: one standard gauge and one mixed gauge (three-rail), allowing both high-speed and conventional trains to operate and connect at surface level to the new Almería station.

The station itself will undergo a comprehensive renovation and expansion to meet future demand, with six tracks in total — three standard gauge, two conventional gauge, and one mixed gauge — and a new station building of approximately 4,800 m² across two floors.

The development will also promote intermodality. A secondary section of the complex will house a new bus station, and beneath it, an underground car park with capacity for up to 400 vehicles. Facilities for last-mile mobility, such as dedicated areas for taxis, urban transport, and a “kiss and train” drop-off zone, will also be included.

Moreover, the project aims to improve the city’s urban connectivity by making the railway more permeable and accessible. New public spaces will be created, including a pedestrian footbridge linking Avenida Sierra de Alhamilla and Calle Elio Antonio de Nebrija.

This phase follows on from the first stage of integration works for the new high-speed rail line in Almería, which included the Río Andarax–El Puche section and the El Puche rail integration, already in operation.

The Almería rail integration project will drive economic and social development and create new opportunities in tourism, commerce, and workforce mobility.
