European rolling stock company Akiem has inaugurated a new maintenance facility in Borlänge, Sweden, marking a significant step in its strategy to expand and enhance its service network across the Nordic region.

The new site, officially opened on 22 October, underscores Akiem’s long-term commitment to supporting Scandinavian rail operators with high-quality, local maintenance solutions. The event brought together customers and partners to showcase the workshop’s capabilities and discuss Akiem’s tailored service offering for operators in Sweden and Norway.
Located in the heart of Sweden’s rail network, the 600-square-metre Borlänge workshop is strategically positioned to serve cross-border corridors linking Sweden, Norway, Germany, and Denmark. The facility is equipped with lifting jacks, cranes, and two maintenance pits, enabling both preventive and corrective maintenance in-house. This setup allows Akiem to offer greater cost efficiency, faster turnaround times, and improved availability for its customers.
Operated by Akiem Maintenance & Services (AMS), the new facility builds on the company’s 15-year presence in Sweden, where a dedicated local team of 30 professionals supports operators nationwide.
“The Borlänge site was initially developed to diversify maintenance solutions beyond our well-established presence in Hallsberg and now serves as a cornerstone for expanding Akiem’s maintenance offering in the region,” said Volker Wallrodt, Managing Director of AMS.
Through this expansion, Akiem aims to further strengthen its maintenance ecosystem, focusing on:
- Enhancing quality and safety through localised, high-performance operations.
- Improving locomotive availability with faster and more flexible servicing.
- Building close partnerships with operators through a customer-centric approach.
The inauguration also provided a platform for networking and industry dialogue, as Akiem reaffirmed its commitment to investing in the Scandinavian market and supporting the growing demand for modern, reliable traction solutions.
