The American engineering firm AECOM, together with the French group Bureau Veritas, has been selected to conduct an independent review of the design and construction of the first phase of “The Wave” rail project in the Australian state of Queensland. The new line will connect Beerwah to Caloundra and is part of the infrastructure program for the 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games.
AECOM and Bureau Veritas will work in partnership for six years as the independent certifier for the The Wave – Phase 1 project.
The role of the two companies will be to verify that the design and construction work comply with the technical, safety, operational, and regulatory requirements established for the new infrastructure.
The contract does not involve the actual construction of the line, but rather the independent review of documentation and construction work before the infrastructure can be accepted and put into service.
Double-Track Line Between Beerwah and Caloundra
The first phase of The Wave project involves the construction of a double-track railway line between Beerwah and Caloundra in the Sunshine Coast region.
The investment will include both new stations and the modernization of existing stations along the route. The new link would connect communities on the eastern Sunshine Coast to Queensland’s passenger rail network.
Authorities estimate that the project will reduce dependence on road transport, improve access to employment centers, and support population growth in the region.
“The Wave represents a transformative step for southeastern Queensland, connecting communities on the eastern Sunshine Coast to the passenger rail network and simplifying travel for thousands of residents,” said Mark McManamny, AECOM’s CEO for Australia and New Zealand.
Project Included in the Plan for the Olympic Games
The Wave is one of the projects included in the 2032 Delivery Plan, the infrastructure program developed by the Queensland state government for the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Brisbane.
The investments aim to increase the capacity of the transportation system ahead of the event, as well as to develop connections that will remain in operation after the competitions conclude.
The new line is expected to improve access to tourist attractions, public institutions, and economic hubs on the Sunshine Coast.
AECOM states that the independent review will provide the Queensland state government and future users with assurance that the infrastructure meets the standards established for major rail projects.

AECOM is an international consulting, engineering, and infrastructure project management firm with operations in transportation, energy, water, and construction.
The company has previously served in independent verification and assurance roles on Australian projects such as the Melbourne Metro Tunnel, the Sydney Metro network modernization, and the extension of the M1 Pacific Highway to Raymond Terrace.
Its partner, Bureau Veritas, is a French group specializing in testing, inspection, and technical certification.
