Adif launches tender for maintenance of traffic management

The Government of Spain authorised Adif to launch a EUR 107.6 million tender, for the technical maintenance of traffic management across the entire railway network.

The tender referees to the supply of specialised technical maintenance of the  equipment and systems (hardware and software) that make up the railway network’s signalling and traffic management system, in order to ensure its reliability and availability.

The contract, which will take over from the current ones upon their expiry, covers the entire railway network and includes interlockings, track circuits and axle counters, ERTMS as well as the advanced Asfa signalling system; and Centralised Traffic Control (CTC).

The works include preventive maintenance for continuous monitoring; scheduled maintenance carried out periodically; and corrective maintenance in the event of specific or urgent needs, as well as the provision of technical support.

The contract is divided into seven lots, grouping devices according to their different technologies. In this way, the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility ensures that Adif has professionals and specialised technical resources for each of these devices and technologies, enabling it to address the technical complexity and scale of the conservation and maintenance tasks required.

In addition, this contract complements those Adif continuously maintains to provide, with the corresponding specialised staff and machinery, the conservation and maintenance of all installations and systems that make up the railway lines – metric, conventional, and high-speed lines – including infrastructure, track, telecommunications, electrification, and civil protection, among others.

This investment forms part of a broader national effort to modernise Spain’s rail network and strengthen its long-term resilience. By renewing maintenance contracts with a more specialised and technologically focused approach, the Government and Adif aim to reduce service disruptions, extend the lifespan of critical systems, and support the transition to a smarter, more energy-efficient rail infrastructure. The new maintenance of traffic management contract also positions Spain to meet future mobility demands and aligns the railway sector with European objectives for digitalisation, sustainability, and low-carbon transport.

It is worth noting that a contract worth EUR 1.7 billion was recently awarded for the supply of green electricity for the railway system.
