ADB to support Bangladesh Railway improvement plans

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has agreed to support Bangladesh Railway’s upgrade plans by providing 27.40 billion Taka (EUR 280 million) under a 36.46-billion Taka (EUR 372 million) umbrella project. Bangladesh Railway suffers from a shortage of locomotives and wagons, which makes it lag far behind the requirement for smart operation and passenger services across the country.
“This project is a part of the ADB support. The development partner is also helping us to set up a double-track line between Dhaka and Chittagong and a fresh line on Dohazari-Cox’s Bazar (in south-east Bangladesh) -Ghundum (on Myanmar) route, procure carriages and locomotives, and improve the railway infrastructure,” an unnamed official was quoted by the Financial Express.
A diesel-electric-locomotive workshop, DEMU workshop and central locomotive workshop will also be upgraded under the ADB-supported project. The project is scheduled to be completed by June 2021.
