Abuja LRT opened

Nigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari, officially commissioned the first phase of Abuja light rail system, known as Abuja Metro, constructed by China Civil Engineering and Construction Corporation.
“Our commitment to the vision for a modern, integrated rail system for Nigeria is total,” the President said during the opening ceremony.
The double-track line has 45 km and 12 stations offering transport link for 13 communities. It also has connection with the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport and country’s railway network.
“The second phase of Abuja LRT system will connect more parts of the city, while our standard-gauge national rail is also taking shape, with the Lagos-Ibadan leg currently under construction,” the President explained.
The LRT system is scheduled to form a 290-km network which will be constructed by China Civil Engineering and Construction Corporation China Civil Engineering and Construction. The total value of the project is EUR 703.8 million, 60% being financed by China’s Export-Import Bank, and 40% will be covered by the Federal Capital Territory.
