ABB has secured a major order from Titagarh Rail Systems to supply traction systems and train control and management systems (TCMS) for the expansion of the Mumbai Metro network.
The contract covers the supply of 40 metro trains, each consisting of six cars, which will run on Line 5 (Orange Line) between Thane and Kalyan via Bhiwandi, and on Line 6 (Pink Line) between Swami Samarth Nagar and Vikhroli.
The new lines are considered essential for improving urban connectivity and reducing travel times in the Mumbai metropolitan area.
Traction and control systems for 40 trains
Under the agreement, ABB will deliver an integrated solution that includes traction converters, auxiliary converters, traction motors, and TCMS software. Line 6 will be equipped with 18 trains and Line 5 with 22 trains.
The equipment will be manufactured in India, with the converters being produced in Bengaluru (Bangalore) and the motors in Vadodara, with the support of local engineering, testing, and maintenance teams.
ABB states that the project marks the company’s entry into the 25 kV AC metro segment in India and strengthens its strategic partnership with Titagarh, launched in 2023.
The order also includes plans for industrial collaboration and gradual co-production of traction components, in line with the government initiatives Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India).
With this contract, ABB is strengthening its position in the Indian metro market, supporting the development of energy-efficient and low-emission urban transport systems tailored to the growing demand for mobility in India’s major cities.
