A new contract signed for the modernisation of a Poznań – Wrocław section

PKP Polish Railway Lines and Torpol signed a PLN 462 million (EUR 107.4 million) contract for the reconstruction of track systems for 35 km on the existing line for the section from the boundary with the Lower Silesia Province in Leszno, which is part of Poznań – Wrocław mainline. Under the contract, the construction works will start in June and are expected to be completed in December 2020.
Torpol will replace km of tracks as well as the traction network. At Rawicz and Bojanów stations, the platforms and the underpass will be reconstruted and two stops in Kaczków and Rydzyna will be constructed. In addition, a road viaduct in Bojanów and a pedestrian and bicycle crossing in Leszno will be created, which will facilitate transport links and increase the level of safety at the junction of the track and road. A similar effect will result from the construction of new viaducts on Piłsudskiego and Świętojańska roads in Rawicz.
“Every passenger traveling by rail between Poznań and Wrocław would like the modernization of this line to be completed. Unfortunately, the problems with the previous contractor were thwarted by the plans of PKP PLK, which is why we are more pleased to announce the signing of a new contract. Let this agreement be the one that will finally close the investment and allow at the turn of 2020 and 2021 to quickly and efficiently overcome the distances between the capitals of two voivodships,” Zbigniew Hoffmann, the Governor of the Wielkopolskie Voivodeship, said.
Under the contract signed, Torpol will continue construction works which initially should be carried out by Astaldi that in the autumn of 2018 failed to carry out the contract. PKP PLK required Astaldi to start construction works, as the contract stipulated, but despite the call, the contractor did not start work on the contract, and as a result, PKP PLK terminated the deal.
Between the capitals of Wielkopolska and Lower Silesia, work has already been carried out on the Lower Silesian section and on Poznań – Czempiń section. Their effect is seen in better performance, more competitive services and passenger comfort between Wroclaw and Oborniki Śląskie, Żmigród and Leszno. The new standard of service has modernised stations and new stops as well as connections on the Poznań – Czempiń route.
The remaining range is the border section of the Lower Silesian Voivodship – Czempiń. On the Czempiń – Leszno section, Torpol is also carrying out the construction works.
The contract signed will solve problems with the implementation of works on the Leszno section border of the province Lower Silesia. Modernization of the E59 line from Poznań to Wrocław will shorten the travel time between Czempin and Rawicz by approx. 20 minutes. Passenger trains will travel at speeds of up to 160 km/h, and freight trains up to 120 km/h. Modernized platforms, underpasses and new viaducts will increase safety and provide better travel comfort.
The investment is implemented as part of “Works on the E59 railway line on the section Wrocław – Poznań, stage IV, border section of the Lower Silesian Voivodship – Czempiń”. The total value of the project is PLN 1.5 billion (EUR 348.78 million), of which PLN 1.2 billion (EUR 279 million) is the European co-financing, under the Connecting Europe Facility.
All projects are scheduled to be completed until the end of 2020.
