700 TGV coaches to offer Wi-Fi in 2017

SNCF-Wi-Fi_strate1-brigittebaudesson_1440x1079_strate_recadre_0_0French rail operator SNCF has announced the next stage of its digital strategy, including trains with Wi-Fi and use of IoT networks. SNCF says that 700 carriages on the high-speed TGV trains with Wi-Fi by 2017. At least 40 carriages will offer the service by the end of this year, using Orange’s 4G network as backhaul.
SNCF is also partnering with the IoT network operator Sigfox as well as Ericsson, IBM and Intesens to help develop connected objects in its network, in order to improve safety, reduce maintenance costs and enhance customer service. Sensors from Intesens help collect information on the status of SNCF infrastructure, and IBM’s Bluemix software stores and analyses the data. SNCF said it’s already deployed sensors on around 220 trains in Ile de France.
