A new CAF tram has begun carrying passengers in Budapest. It is the 40th CAF tram to enter service in the Hungarian capital, following the successful completion of the required technical inspections, test runs and official authorisation procedures.
The purchase of the new CAF trams is being carried out under a government decision as part of Hungary’s Recovery and Resilience Plan, with financial support from the European Union.
CAF tram number 2295 is contributing to the development of modern public transport in Budapest. The vehicle has a low-floor design, making it easier for passengers to board and helping to make public transport more accessible.
More CAF trams to enter service in Budapest
The new tram is part of an order for 51 CAF trams, with further vehicles due to be delivered to Budapest and prepared for passenger service.
In February 2023, the Hungarian government approved the final option under the 2014 Urbos tram procurement contract, allowing the capital to purchase 51 new low-floor trams with funding from the European Union and the Hungarian government.
The order consists of 46 standard-length trams and five extra-long 56-metre trams.
The next trams are already at various stages of the technical inspection and authorisation procedures required before they can begin carrying passengers.
The arrival of the 40th CAF tram marks another step in Budapest’s long-term programme to modernise its tram services. The new vehicles are designed to offer passengers a more comfortable and accessible journey, with low-floor boarding and modern interiors suited to everyday urban travel.
The programme also aims to improve the reliability and efficiency of public transport across the Hungarian capital. As more CAF trams complete their technical checks and receive the necessary approvals, passengers will gradually see additional vehicles entering service. The 51-tram order is therefore expected to bring a significant increase in the number of modern CAF trams operating on Budapest’s extensive tram network.
