On 21 May, the 100th double-deck RER NG train, manufactured by Alstom, made its first journey from Chelles-Gournay station, marking another key milestone in the modernisation of regional rail transport in Île-de-France.
The fourth generation of RER rolling stock, the RER NG (Nouvelle Génération), has been in operation on the RER E line since November 2023 and on the RER D line since December 2024. Designed specifically for the needs of passengers in the densely populated Île-de-France region, the RER NG double-deck train is more reliable, more comfortable and more accessible than previous generations.
In total, 262 trainsets have been financed and ordered, including 132 seven-car trains for the RER D line, each 130 metres long, and 130 shorter trainsets of 112 metres for the RER E line. The overall investment amounts to €5.5 billion and is fully funded by Île-de-France Mobilités.
The most recent order was placed in June 2025 by SNCF Voyageurs for the delivery of a further 96 RER NG trainsets for the RER D line.
Since 2016, Île-de-France Mobilités has been investing heavily in the renewal of its entire rolling stock fleet, with more than 1,550 new or refurbished metros, trains, RER units and trams already operating across the wider Paris region.
The introduction of RER NG trains on lines D and E represents a significant step in the transformation of regional mobility, delivered by Île-de-France Mobilités, SNCF Voyageurs and Alstom. The new rolling stock has been designed to address capacity, punctuality and comfort challenges on two of the busiest lines in the region.
With capacity increased by up to 20%, the RER NG supports growing passenger demand while significantly improving travel conditions, offering air conditioning, passenger information systems, enhanced connectivity and improved lighting. The first trains entered service on RER D in 2024, following their initial launch on RER E in 2023.
