World Bank extends USD 780 million loan for Tanzanian Railways

The World Bank has recently extended loans amounting to USD S780 million to be used for several new public infrastructure projects in Tanzania. According to the Tanzanian government, the loans will be used to expand the port of Dar es Salaam, improve the country’s energy capacity as well as support the transport sector.

One of the cornerstone initiatives that has been financed through these agreements is Urban Transport Improvement Project, which is aimed at improving transport mobility, accessibility, safety and service delivery along selected corridors in Dar es Salaam.

The bank has also agreed to lend Tanzania USD S300 million for upgrading of the railway line from Dar es Salaam to Ruvu area in Coast Region where the government is setting up an inland container depot to reduce traffic congestion in Dar es Salaam.

The World Bank is currently financing 23 national projects amounting to USD 3.6 billion, in addition to seven regional operations through which Tanzania accesses USD 551 million in financing, reaching a total commitment of USD 4.3 billion. The bulk of this support (22%) focuses on the transport sector, followed by urban development (20%).
