The Transdev Group is consolidating its position in the Dutch public transport market after winning contracts and launching urban networks with a cumulative value of over 4 billion EUR over their lifetime. Through its subsidiary Transdev Nederland, the French operator is becoming a key player in the operation of high-capacity urban systems, with a focus on electric transport and integrated networks.
Utrecht Binnen: the tram, the backbone of the urban network
The centerpiece of Transdev’s expansion in the Netherlands is the launch, on December 14, 2025, of the Utrecht Binnen network, which includes bus and tram services in the central area of Utrecht, under the U-OV brand.
The concession, awarded in June 2024 for a period of 10 years, has an estimated value of approximately EUR 1.7 billion.
The Utrecht tram network comprises three lines with a total length of 18.3 km, operated with 54 multiple units supplied by CAF. The trams carry around 10 million passengers annually, constituting the main high-capacity public transport mode in the city and being integrated with the regional transport network.
Operations are supported by a team of around 1,000 employees, including management, maintenance, and operational support staff, within a program that emphasizes reliability and punctuality.
Regional concessions and complementary services
In addition to Utrecht, Transdev has been selected to operate the Arnhem–Nijmegen–Foodvalley (ANF) concession in the province of Gelderland for a period of 10 years, between 2026 and 2036.
The contract, worth over EUR 1.5 billion, combines two existing concessions already operated by the company and is part of the regional strategy to transition to electric public transport.
At the same time, the subsidiary Connexxion Taxi Services has been provisionally selected to operate the Valys service, a national on-demand transport system for people with reduced mobility.
The contract is valued at approximately EUR 0.5 billion for an initial period of six years, starting in 2026, and remains subject to appeal procedures.
HWGO: regional network, complementary role
In the HWGO (Hoeksche Waard–Goeree-Overflakkee) region in the province of South Holland, Transdev has started operating a renewed concession, awarded in November 2024 for a period of 13 years, until 2038.
The contract, valued at nearly EUR 0.5 billion, serves approximately 4 million passengers annually and aims to expand services and transition to zero-emission mobility in a predominantly regional area.
