Nexus, the public body which runs the Tyne and Wear Metro, has awarded Scheidt & Bachmann a contract for the delivery and installation of new ticketing gates at Regent Centre Metro Station in Gosforth, Newcastle.

The new ticketing gates are part of a wider initiative to improve safety and reduce fare evasion across the metro network. More than 1.3 million passengers every year will pass through the new ticket gates at Regent Centre station alone, which will be staffed by Metro’s customer service team to tackle ticketless travel and improve safety.
Regent Centre will be the first station on the Metro network to receive Scheidt & Bachmann’s advanced gate solution, the FareGo PG|50, which supports a wide range of ticket formats, including magnetic stripe tickets, paper and mobile barcode tickets, contactless smart cards, and ITSO-compliant media. The design facilitates right-hand tapping, enables fast processing, and provides clear passenger guidance to maximise throughput. Installation of the five new FareGo PG|50 gates is scheduled for completion later in 2025.
Nexus already relies on Scheidt & Bachmann’s fare collection technology. The new ticketing gates will complement the existing, proven system and will be fully integrated into the current fare collection infrastructure.
“Our investment in new ticket gates at Regent Centre marks an important step in our strategy to modernise the Tyne and Wear Metro and enhance the customer experience,” Paul Welford, Major Projects Director at Nexus, said.
A GBP 2.1 million (EUR 2.4 million) project to install the first new automatic ticket gates on the Tyne and Wear Metro in more than ten years is now underway, following investment by North East Mayor Kim McGuinness to make the network safer.
Thus Nexus is carrying out the first phase of the project at Regent Centre Metro station after the Mayor announced in March that she was putting more money towards new Metro ticket gates as part of a GBP 208 million (EUR 239.5 million) package of wider transport investment.
