The new-generation Nightjet trains have entered service on the Zurich–Vienna route following their inaugural run on June 14. The night train, operated by ÖBB and SBB, offers greater comfort, more privacy, free Wi-Fi, and the new Mini Cabins for solo travelers.
Passengers can now travel on the new-generation Nightjet between Zurich and Vienna, on one of the most important night routes between Switzerland and Austria.
The first modern Nightjet train departed on the Vienna–Zurich route on the evening of June 14, marked by a ceremony at Vienna Central Station. The train was welcomed in Zurich on the morning of June 15.
With the introduction of the new rolling stock on the Zurich–Vienna route, two of the eight night trains departing from Zurich are already using the new-generation Nightjet. The first such service is between Zurich and Hamburg, and the Zurich–Amsterdam route is scheduled to be added in December.
Mini Cabins and Even More Comfort
Matthias Bütler, a member of the SBB executive board and interim head of the passenger transport division, stated that passenger reactions to the new-generation Nightjet have been positive.
“The feedback from our customers regarding the new-generation Nightjet, which is already operating between Zurich and Hamburg, has been very positive. The modern design, increased comfort, and new offerings, such as the Mini Cabins, are particularly appreciated,” said Matthias Bütler.
Kurt Bauer, head of long-distance transport at ÖBB Personenverkehr, stated that the Vienna–Zurich route is well-suited for the new Nightjet due to high demand for comfortable and sustainable travel.
“The Vienna–Zurich route is an ideal application for the new-generation Nightjet. It connects two of the most important cultural and tourist cities in the Alpine region and meets strong demand for comfortable and sustainable travel options. With Nightjet, we offer not just a connection between two destinations, but a travel experience that becomes part of the vacation or city break right from the start,” said Kurt Bauer.
Tickets starting at 34 Swiss francs
SBB and ÖBB offer discounted tickets for Nightjet travelers who book in advance and have flexibility in choosing their travel date or time.
For the Zurich–Vienna route, tickets in a seating car start at 34 Swiss francs (nearly EUR 37) per person one way.
For families or groups of friends, tickets for a berth in a 4-person compartment start at 53 Swiss francs (about EUR 57 ). The new Mini Cabins, designed especially for solo travelers, are available at the same price.
For a higher level of comfort and more space and privacy, a berth in a sleeping compartment can be booked starting at 86 Swiss francs.
The operators note that these prices are discounted offers with limited availability and may vary depending on availability, travel date, and time of booking.
Trains with 254 seats
The new-generation Nightjet train has 7 cars: two cars with seats—one of which is a control car and the other a multifunctional car—3 cars with berths, and 2 sleeping cars.
The maximum capacity is 254 seats per train.
The multifunctional car offers 6 spaces for bicycles, as well as more room for luggage, strollers, and sports equipment.
Free Wi-Fi and NFC card access
The new generation of Nightjet trains includes even more technical features. The trains have free Wi-Fi, a modern passenger information system in all cars, and standard power outlets, supplemented by USB ports and wireless charging for electronic devices.
The windows allow for better mobile signal transmission, which should ensure a more stable phone connection.
The compartments feature control screens for comfort functions, including lighting adjustment and the ability to call the onboard staff. The compartments are equipped with an electronic access system using NFC cards, and all cars have video surveillance to enhance the sense of security.
