The modernisation of the Athens metro is set to be completed five months ahead of schedule

The largest-scale project to modernise the superstructure of Lines 2 and 3 of the Athens metro is now 98 per cent complete. So far, 29.4 km of track has been replaced, and the contracted works are due to be completed in September, five months ahead of the original schedule.

The track replacement works on Lines 2 and 3 of the Athens Metro have entered their final stage, with the project now 98 per cent complete.

The project represents the most extensive modernisation of the trackwork on the two main lines since the Athens Metro opened, and the contracted works are expected to be completed in September 2026.

The original deadline was February 2027, meaning the project is set to be completed approximately five months ahead of schedule.

29.4 km of track replaced

Work began in November 2025, and by 6 August 2026, 29.4 km of track had been replaced.

During the same period, 1,950 welds and ultrasonic tests were carried out to check the quality and strength of the new infrastructure.

Work has already been completed on some of the busiest sections of the network, between the Sepolia – Dafni and Syntagma – Ethniki Amyna stations.

According to STASY, the company that operates Athens’ metro and tram lines, the works aim to increase the reliability of the infrastructure and maintain the network’s safety and availability.

The final section will be modernised in September

The section between the Monastiraki and Kerameikos stations remains to be completed as part of the works specified in the contract.

Work on this section is scheduled for September, after which the main project will be considered complete.

The modernisation has a total budget of 7.3 EUR million and forms part of the programme for preventive maintenance and selective modernisation of the Athens metro network.

The works are being carried out by the consortium Leonardos Rigas Techniki A.E. – Sidirodromika Erga ATE, under a contract worth approximately EUR 4.84 million excluding VAT.

The supply of the new rails is being carried out separately by Artemi A.E., under a contract worth approximately EUR 2.44 million excluding VAT.

A further 7.3 km of track could be replaced

However, the programme could be extended.

STASY is awaiting approval from the Greek Court of Auditors to extend the scope of the contract, so that a further 7.3 km of track on the metro network can be replaced.

If the extension is approved, the works will continue even after the completion of the 29.4 km envisaged in the current phase.

The operator describes the project as the most significant modernisation project for the trackwork on Lines 2 and 3 since they entered service, with the aim of maintaining the safety, reliability and operational availability standards of the Athens metro.
