The urban transit operator STASY has launched a tender for the complete modernization of 12 first-generation trains operating on Lines 2 and 3 of the Athens Metro. The trains, the only ones in the network without passenger air conditioning, will be fitted with new equipment and will be able to remain in service for at least another 25 years.
The first trains introduced on Athens’ modern metro network will be refurbished and equipped with air conditioning in passenger areas for the first time.
STASY, the public company that operates the metro and trams in the Greek capital, has launched the procurement process for the modernization of the first-generation trains used on Lines 2 and 3.
The contract has an estimated budget of EUR 109 million, excluding VAT, and is funded through the European “Transport 2021–2027” program.
12 trains, four of which are being taken out of service
The first phase of the program includes 12 trains, each consisting of six railcars, for a total of 72 vehicles.
Four of the trainsets are currently out of service due to the age of the equipment and increasing difficulties in procuring replacement parts.
The trains entered service with the opening of the modern Athens metro lines and have now been in service for approximately 26 years.
The operator describes the modernization as a nearly complete overhaul. Worn-out or technologically obsolete equipment will be replaced so that the trains can operate reliably for at least another 25 years.
The only trains on the network without air conditioning
The most noticeable change for passengers will be the installation of air conditioning systems.
The first-generation trains are the only ones on the Athens metro network that were not factory-fitted with air conditioning in the passenger cars.
Once the project is completed, all trains in service during the summer months will be equipped with air conditioning—a significant improvement in a city where high temperatures frequently cause discomfort on public transportation.
The interior will also feature:
- video surveillance cameras;
- new screens and panels for passenger information;
- LED lighting;
- additional sound insulation;
- a wireless system for transmitting diagnostic data;
- equipment for recording technical events.
Special spaces will also be provided for people who use wheelchairs.
New Motors and Traction Systems
The upgrades will not be limited to the interior of the trains.
The old traction system will be replaced with new-generation alternating current motors and power converters.
According to STASY, the equipment will be lighter, more reliable, and more energy-efficient, and will require less maintenance.
The braking, control, and fault-diagnosis systems, as well as the driver’s consoles and the electro-pneumatic door-opening systems, will also be modernized.
The program aims both to return idle trains to service and to increase the availability of the entire fleet at a time when the Athens metro network is facing high demand.
The first modernized train is expected in 2028
The bidding process is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
The contract will have a duration of 36 months from the date of signing, and the modernized trains will be delivered in stages.
The first refurbished train, equipped with air conditioning, is expected to return to service in 2028.
