Austria has reached the milestone of 300 Desiro ML EMUs in service, a moment that confirms the success of the platform used by ÖBB under the name Cityjet.
Desiro ML trains are designed for suburban and regional service, with a top speed of 160 km/h and high acceleration, making them well-suited for networks with frequent stops and short headways.
Siemens Mobility built these trains in two variants for ÖBB: one for large urban areas, such as Vienna, and one for regional transport.
Over the years, the platform has become an important part of rail mobility in Austria, operating in all nine federal states and providing regional and local connections with a high level of reliability and comfort. In addition, the trains also serve the regular connection between Burgenland and Hungary, reinforcing their cross-border role in public transportation. Production and assembly took place primarily in Austria and Germany, with final assembly at ÖBB Technical Services in Jedlersdorf.
Comfort and Accessibility
The Desiro ML Cityjet is designed for barrier-free access and high passenger volumes, and is adapted to accommodate people with reduced mobility. The train features a low floor, wide access and passageways between railcars, as well as step-free boarding on Austrian 550 mm platforms; for lower platforms, retractable steps and an elevator are provided on each side. The interior includes multifunctional areas, dedicated bicycle spaces, adjustable seats, and modern passenger information systems.
In terms of technical specifications, the EMUs have a capacity of 244 seats in the urban version and 259 in the regional version, with an axle load of less than 17 metric tons; the trains also comply with current safety standards for impact and fire protection.
By the end of the project, Siemens and ÖBB will have delivered a total of 294 units to ÖBB and 15 to Raaberbahn, strengthening one of Europe’s most significant fleets of modern regional trains. Siemens Mobility also highlights the platform’s energy efficiency, as well as its potential for development toward battery-hybrid solutions, including for non-electrified lines. This positions the Desiro ML as a relevant solution for sustainable mobility and attractive public transportation in the long term.
