TfL selects DB ESG for Piccadilly Line QA

DB ESG, in collaboration with DB Systemtechnik (DB ST), has been appointed by Transport for London (TfL) to provide independent quality assurance services for the new Piccadilly line train fleet, currently being built by Siemens Mobility as part of TfL’s major upgrade programme.

Under the contract, DB ESG will deliver comprehensive quality surveillance throughout the design, build, and testing phases of the project, ensuring that all manufacturing processes and deliverables meet the agreed standards.

Independent oversight of Siemens manufacturing process

The new fleet of 94 trains, part of the Piccadilly Line Upgrade, is being manufactured by Siemens Mobility in its advanced European facilities. DB ESG’s in-house rolling stock experts will oversee all quality assurance aspects of production, supported by DB Systemtechnik’s inspection specialists, who have extensive experience conducting similar work at Siemens sites in Vienna and Wildenrath.

As the appointed Quality Assurance Service Provider, DB ESG will observe, supervise, and verify key manufacturing, inspection, and testing activities throughout the project. The independent checks will enable early identification of defects or deviations, ensuring timely corrective measures to maintain schedule reliability and cost control.

Combined UK and EU Expertise

“Having local teams available in both the UK and the EU offers significant benefits in terms of availability, local language skills and in-depth knowledge of facilities and processes. This greatly supports a robust and efficient approach to this project,” said Nick Goodhand, Managing Director at DB ESG.

Christoph Kirschinger, Managing Director, Sales at DB Systemtechnik, added: “We are extremely familiar with Siemens Mobility’s production sites, processes, and activities. Our expertise enables us to contribute effectively, ensuring the highest quality standards throughout the project.”

The collaboration between DB ESG and DB Systemtechnik brings together UK-based project oversight with European manufacturing expertise, providing TfL with an additional layer of assurance as production of the new fleet progresses.

Supporting the Piccadilly Line Upgrade

The Piccadilly Line Upgrade forms a key part of TfL’s long-term investment strategy to modernise London’s Underground network, delivering greater capacity, improved reliability, and enhanced passenger comfort.

The introduction of the new Siemens-built trains will mark a significant milestone in TfL’s ongoing efforts to modernise one of London’s busiest lines.
