Tenders announced for Brno railway junction

The Czech Railway Administration (Správa železnic) has launched the first in a series of major contracts to modernise the Brno railway junction, a critical infrastructure project in South Moravia. The winning design team will now begin preparing detailed plans for the reconstruction of the Černovice rail line and station area.

This is the first phase of a long-term upgrade that will see Brno gain a modern, high-capacity rail network, including a brand-new main station. Construction is expected to run through the 2030s.

A key focus of the initial phase is relocating the Brno-Černovice stop onto the railway bridge over Olomoucká Street. The new location will serve as an interchange terminal, improving connections between trains and the city’s public transport system. The appointed designers will prepare all the necessary planning and construction documentation, as well as oversee the works during construction. Geological surveys and land purchases are set to begin immediately to keep the project moving swiftly.

The second major contract, expected to be announced in August, will cover plans to redevelop Brno’s Lower Station, Horní Heršpice station, and most notably, the construction of the new main railway station. This stage will be carried out in close cooperation with the city of Brno, and is closely linked to wider urban development plans—including the creation of a new city district.

In autumn, the Railway Administration will launch the third phase, focusing on a technology building for advanced signalling systems and a new data centre. Designers will prioritise not only fire safety but also cybersecurity measures.

The final phase, also set to begin this autumn, will prepare for the upgrade of rail infrastructure in the Židenice area. Plans include moving the station closer to tram stops, relocating utility networks, adjusting nearby roads, and installing noise-reduction barriers.

With construction expected between 2028 and 2035, the Brno railway junction project aims to significantly boost capacity for both passenger and freight transport, and prepare the network for future high-speed trains. Once completed, the project will provide a more efficient, accessible, and reliable rail system, greatly improving transport options and quality of life for Brno residents and visitors alike.
