Systra wins new contract for Copenhagen metro extension

Systra has been awarded a new contract for the extension of Copenhagen’s M4 metro line, strengthening its role as a long-term partner to operator Metroselskabet.

The company’s Danish division will provide land and regulatory advice for the new extension to the north of the capital, in collaboration with local firm Vanovis.

M4 extension to the north

Line M4, which was extended south in June 2024, will now be extended to serve new residential areas developed in a former port area.

The new section, built on a 1.6 km viaduct, will include two stations – Ydre Nordhavn – Levantkaj and Nordsø Plads – and is scheduled to open in 2030.

It is estimated that 80% of the area’s residents will have a metro station less than 600 meters away, and the approximately 40,000 residents of the new neighborhoods will benefit from reduced travel times:

  • approximately 7 minutes to the city center;
  • approximately 14 minutes to Central Station;
  • approximately 27 minutes to the international airport.

Ambitious climate goal

The Danish authorities aim to reduce the carbon footprint of the new extension by 50% compared to the existing sections of the line.

A significant part of the CO₂ savings would be achieved as early as the design phase, through the use of more sustainable materials and construction methods.

Once operational, the extension could reduce car traffic in the areas served by approximately 14%.

“We are delighted to continue our collaboration with Metroselskabet and to contribute, alongside Vanovis, to the development of sustainable solutions for public infrastructure in Copenhagen,” said Thomas Vesterholm, Director of Rail & Metro at Systra Denmark.

A long-term partnership

The M4 extension is part of a long-standing collaboration between Systra and Metroselskabet. The company was involved in the design of the M4 line, which will be inaugurated between 2020 and 2024, as well as in the development of the M3 Cityringen line, which opened in 2019.

Cityringen is a fully automated circular line, 15.5 km long with 17 underground stations, which forms a ring around the city center and is interconnected with the regional rail network and other automated metro lines.

In 2025, Systra also won the contract to design the M5 line as part of a consortium.
