Sydney metro tunnel contract awarded

The NSW Government awarded John Holland CPB Contractors Ghella Joint Venture a contract to deliver a new metro railway crossing deep under the Sydney Harbour. The AUD 2.81 billion (USD 2.1 billion) contract is to deliver twin 15.5 km tunnels and associated civil works on Stage 2 of the Sydney Metro project. The joint venture comprises CPB Contractors (45%), John Holland (45%) and Ghella (10%).
Design and construction works under the Sydney Metro City & Southwest Tunnel and Station Excavation (TSE) Works contract include twin 15.5 km tunnels from Chatswood to Sydenham travelling under Sydney Harbour and the CBD using five tunnel boring machines (TBMs), 57 cross passages approximately every 240 metres between the tunnels and a temporary access shaft at Blues Point; tunnel dive structures at Chatswood and Marrickville; excavation of six new underground metro stations at Crows Nest, Victoria Cross, Barangaroo, Martin Place, Pitt Street and Waterloo; a crossover cavern at Barangaroo to allow trains to cross from one track to another; design and manufacture of about 99,000 precast concrete segments to line the tunnels.
Tunnel and station excavation works are expected to start in coming weeks with the contract to conclude in mid-2021. Once the tunneling contract is complete in 2021, work will continue along the 30km length of the project to lay tracks, fit out stations and upgrade the existing rail line from Sydenham to Bankstown to metro rail.
“This new metro line will eventually stretch 66km kilometres and connect dozens of suburbs along the way. When services through the City start in 2024, the tunnels will move more people than the Harbour Bridge and Sydney Harbour Tunnel combined,” Transport and Infrastructure Minister Andrew Constance said.
The Sydney Metro City & Southwest project cost range has been set at AUD 11.5 billion to AUD 12.5 billion (USD 8.7 – USD 9.5 billion). The final project budget will be confirmed once all major contracts are awarded. Tunnelling on Stage 1 of Sydney Metro finished in January last year, with services set to start on the AUD 8.3 billion (USD 6.3 billion) Sydney Metro Northwest in 2019 with a new metro train every four minutes in the peak.
