Sydney Metro City & Southwest business case approved

Infrastructure Australia has added the Sydney Metro City & Southwest to the infrastructure priority list as a high priority project.
“Sydney Metro City & Southwest is an important step in ensuring that Sydney remains a competitive, global city and an attractive place to live and work. The positive assessment of the Sydney Metro City & Southwest business case reflects that this is a sound investment for Sydney—an investment that will enhance the productivity and connectivity of a city that accounts for one-fifth of Australia’s economic output”, Infrastructure Australia Chief Executive, Philip Davies said.
Sydney Metro City & Southwest involves two phases:
• the construction of Chatswood – Sydenham section, with a 15.5 km twin rail tunnels; the line will run under Sydney Harbour and through Sydney’s CBD out to Sydenham;
• for the Sydenham – Bankstown section the project includes the modernisation and conversion of 13.5km and all 11 stations to metro standards
The Sydney Metro project will deliver in 30.5 km of metro rail between Chatswood and Bankstown, including a new Sydney Harbour Tunnel Crossing. Under the project, the first of five tunnel boring machines will be in the ground before the end of 2018 to deliver new 15.5-km twin railway tunnels between the end of Sydney Metro Northwest at Chatswood and Sydenham. New stations will be delivered at Crows Nest, Victoria Cross, Barangaroo, Martin Place, Pitt Street and Waterloo along with new underground platforms at Central Station.
The new system will increase rail capacity through the Sydney CBD, improve reliability and resilience of the wider transport network, and reshape the urban profile of Sydney.
