STRABAG is strengthening its presence in the railway construction sector in Eastern Europe through the planned acquisition of a major Romanian company.
STRABAG aims to strengthen its presence in Romania’s growing railway infrastructure market and expand its expertise, value chain depth, and equipment fleet capacity in the field of railway infrastructure construction, according to a company statement released on Thursday.
STRABAG SE signed an agreement on Thursday to acquire 100% of the shares of BAWI Construction SRL, based in Bucharest. Through this transaction, the Group is taking a new step toward strengthening its position in the European railway infrastructure market. The transaction is expected to close in the second half of 2026
Who is BAWI
BAWI is an established provider in the railway infrastructure sector, with extensive experience across the entire value chain—from construction and modernization services to specialized works and in-house component manufacturing. The company has approximately 240 employees and generated revenue of approximately EUR 60 million in 2025. A strong team of qualified professionals and a specialized fleet of equipment enable a high degree of in-house production.
With the planned acquisition, STRABAG is further expanding its activities in one of the most important growth markets in Southeast Europe. The railway infrastructure market in Romania is benefiting from extensive investments and funding programs, particularly within the framework of European infrastructure initiatives.

Completion of the transaction is subject to obtaining the usual regulatory approvals.
History in the Romanian market
STRABAG has been active in the Romanian market since 1991 and established its headquarters in Bucharest in 1994. Currently, the STRABAG Group has subsidiaries in all major regions of Romania and operates in all construction sectors, particularly in the segments of transportation infrastructure, building construction, and civil engineering, as well as in environmental construction projects. STRABAG Romania ended 2023 with a 65% increase in production volume, from EUR 315.46 million in 2022 to EUR 519.26 million. It also recorded a 10% increase in the number of employees (FTE), from 1,768 in 2022 to 1,942 employees (FTE) at the end of last year,” according to Thursday’s press release.
