Stadler and Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) have officially presented a new double-deck train for long-distance services, set to enter operation between Vienna and Salzburg from late 2026. The new KISS trainsets, designed for speeds of up to 200 km/h, will offer around 20 per cent more seating capacity and set new benchmarks for passenger comfort and accessibility.

The unveiling event took place in Vienna, attended by ÖBB CEO Andreas Matthä, Stadler Chairman Peter Spuhler, and Austrian Federal Minister Peter Hanke. Guests were invited to tour the interior of the new train, marking its first public showing.
Enhanced capacity and accessibility with the new double-deck train
A total of 14 six-car KISS trainsets have been ordered, with phased deployment along the busy Western main line. Each train will accommodate 486 passengers, significantly increasing capacity on the route. The new trains feature low-floor entry areas and wide, barrier-free doors, ensuring seamless access for passengers with reduced mobility, bicycles, pushchairs, and luggage.
“The Railjet double-decker represents a completely new and special vehicle,” said ÖBB CEO Andreas Matthä. “We already operate double-deck trains in local services, but this marks a new milestone for long-distance rail. These new trains will substantially boost capacity on the Western route starting in late 2026.”
Designed for passenger comfort
The KISS trainsets have been designed to meet modern expectations for long-distance rail travel. Each train includes two quiet zones located in the end cars and family-friendly compartments in the middle carriages. There are dedicated areas for bicycles, along with vending machines for snacks and drinks, providing a basic level of onboard catering.
Passengers can also expect onboard Wi-Fi, real-time travel updates on passenger information monitors, air-conditioned interiors, and a total of eight restrooms per train, including one accessible toilet. Additional features include secure luggage racks, USB charging ports, and standard power sockets.
A step forward for Austrian rail
Speaking at the launch, Peter Spuhler, Chairman of Stadler, said: “The new double-deck trains are an important step towards a comfortable and sustainable future for long-distance transport in Austria. With their high capacity and innovative features, the KISS trains offer passengers an unmatched travel experience. We’re proud to present this beautiful train in partnership with ÖBB and contribute to the ongoing improvement of Austria’s public transport.”
The KISS double-deck train is part of ÖBB’s broader modernisation plan, which focuses on increasing capacity and comfort while advancing the country’s climate and mobility goals.
