Softronic brings Craiova back on the map of European electric locomotives producers

Softronic Craiova is a company specialized in construction, modernization and repairs of electric locomotives, being on the market since 1999. Pioneers of microprocessor electronic equipments, the company produces traffic safety equipment, measurement, control and diagnosis, which imposed through quality and high reliability, many of them being very popular on the rolling stock. Authorized as a railway supplier and with the quality system according to ISO 9001-2001, the company has increased its products and services range from year to year, being able to even make exports through European Union (Germany, Hungary, and Bulgaria) and other countries (Iran, Montenegro, and Serbia). Through 12 years of experience, the company has produced new types of locomotives and modernized an important number of locomotives produced by Electroputere.

In 2008, in the “Gara de Nord” Railway Station, at “Railway Days” Softronic launched PHOENIX, the first electric locomotive produced in Romania after 1990.
At the Railway Technology Expo – event within  “Railway Days”, in October 2010, Softronic launched TransMontana, the first Romanian locomotive with asynchronous traction motors that is according with the UIC norms regarding the locomotive’s driving desk.
On a knowledge based development, the company has in its portfolio only products designed in its workshops, increasing their market share by addressing the current technical trend courageously. Its development strategy aims to increase long-term competitiveness and regarding this, one of its objectives is to increase the research and innovation capacity. Motivating this choice of this acting mode is that the main generator of progress is research, all products manufactured by Softronic are based on its research, many of them having an OSIM patent.
One of the ways that this goal can be achieved is creating a suitable material base that can support its activities of applied research, design and innovation. To transform its plan into reality, the company turned to using the structural funds offered by the Operational Program Increase of Economic Competitiveness, Priority axes “Increase the economic competitiveness through research – development and innovation”.
The project that Softronic implements is named ‘Developing CD laboratory in modernizing and building electric locomotives field’ which is in the final phase, the objectives being achieved: six research laboratories of about 450 m2, five test stands, more than 300 research and measurement instrumentation of the highest performance, computers and applied software for its computers and research network.
Following the ending of this project, Softronic has one of the most modern and advanced research centers. Moreover, the company is certified by the National Authority for Scientific Research being a unit capable of developing research and development activities.
In parallel with the results of the project co-financed by the European Union funds, the company monitors the selection, recruitment and employment of personnel with appropriate skills and abilities, rapid uptake of innovation, new product development located at least at the technical level of similar products manufactured by established companies. Thus it is expected a significant increase in economic performance and hence competitiveness on the
European market.
