SNCF Group and Mistral AI form strategic partnership

The SNCF Group has announced a new strategic partnership with French AI pioneer Mistral AI, aimed at expanding the deployment of generative artificial intelligence across the company. This collaboration seeks to enhance digital integration, streamline industrial processes, and improve service quality for both employees and passengers.

SNCF has been an early adopter of artificial intelligence, incorporating AI into its IT systems since 2010 to tackle complex challenges and boost operational efficiency. Through this latest partnership, the Group takes a significant step forward in integrating generative AI technologies, building on a shared vision with Mistral AI for accessible, ethical, and responsible AI aligned with social and environmental values.

As part of the agreement, SNCF’s internal generative AI tool, Groupe SNCF GPT, will begin testing and gradually integrating Mistral AI’s models. Launched in January 2024, Groupe SNCF GPT is currently being trialled at scale with over 100,000 employees and provides a secure, multi-model AI engine to support staff in their daily activities.

Additionally, SNCF developers will gain access to Codestral, Mistral AI’s code assistance tool, to support their software development tasks.

The partnership also sets out ambitious goals for joint research and development in generative AI. SNCF plans to accelerate implementation of AI in operational use cases such as predictive maintenance, passenger information systems, and transport planning. A dedicated team from Mistral AI will work closely with SNCF to ensure alignment with industrial and operational priorities, enhancing both efficiency and performance.

“We are proud to partner with a French and European leader in artificial intelligence and to support the regional tech ecosystem. AI is a real driver of transformation for the SNCF Group, and this partnership reinforces our strategy while supporting our digital sovereignty goals. Access to Mistral AI’s expertise and tools is a tremendous opportunity to continue embedding this technology for the benefit of our staff, our customers, and the rail sector as a whole,” Julien Nicolas, Chief Digital & AI Officer at SNCF Group and Head of E.SNCF Solutions, commented.

“SNCF Group’s commitment to AI that serves both its employees and its customers demonstrates its ambition and strategic foresight. The trust SNCF places in our solutions and our teams to support this transformation is an honour and a source of pride for Mistral AI,” Marjorie Janiewicz, Chief Commercial Officer at Mistral AI, added.
