Škoda to supply new trains for Saltsjöbanan line

Region Stockholm (SL) has signed an agreement with Škoda Transportation to supply a new generation of trains for the Saltsjöbanan line, marking a major step in the long-term modernisation of the historic commuter railway. The contract, signed on 11 November at the Swedish Transport Administration’s headquarters, covers 16 new vehicles designed to replace rolling stock that has been in service for more than 50 years.

The investment aims to deliver a quieter, safer and more accessible travel experience for passengers, while improving capacity and reliability on a line that links eastern Stockholm with the city centre.

Erik Norling, Head of Administration at the Swedish Transport Administration and CEO of SL, welcomed the milestone.
“This is a big step forward for the Saltsjöbanan line. We are investing in modern trains that provide a calmer, more comfortable journey and public transport that more people can trust.”

Modern fleet to replace ageing trains

The order is valued at approximately SEK 1.56 billion, covering the design, manufacture and delivery of the new vehicles. Škoda Transportation, part of the Škoda Group, will be responsible for the full engineering and production process. The Czech manufacturer has extensive experience in the European public transport market, supplying trains, trams and electric buses to several major cities.

A joint design phase will begin in 2026, during which the exterior and interior layout of the vehicles will be finalised. Production is scheduled to start in 2027. The first units will be delivered to Stockholm in 2029 for testing, with passenger service expected to begin around the turn of the year 2029/2030. The new trains will be phased in gradually as the existing fleet is retired.

Improved comfort and accessibility

The new vehicles will be around 36 metres long, with the option to operate up to three units together for a maximum train length of 108 metres. Each vehicle will accommodate about 250 passengers, including 90 seated, and operate at speeds of up to 80 km/h.

To improve the passenger experience, the trains will be equipped with:

  • air conditioning
  • digital passenger information systems
  • CCTV
  • charging outlets
  • flexible multi-purpose areas for wheelchairs, pushchairs and bicycles

Designed for a technical lifespan of 40 years, the fleet forms part of a wider programme to future-proof Saltsjöbanan and deliver more sustainable mobility for Stockholm’s eastern suburbs.
