Signage in stations encourage mobility

Signage in railway stations help passengers spend their time more efficiently and encourage mobility growth. The different types of information displayed inside railway stations grant passengers assistance to rapidly access information points, platforms and trains to reach their destinations, as well as directions to connexions with other means of transport. To benefit from a safe and time-saving journey, passengers need that the railway station transit would be correlated with the signage system.

The most important aspects for passengers when it comes for transport will always be safety and punctuality,
as well as the quality of the information system inside a railway station. This is also taken into account for improving standards. If railway transport is about to become the first choice against road and air transport, then it will have to provide superior comfort, commodity and ease in accessing the stations. This is the area where passengers want to see an improvement inside stations: signage, facilities and staff. Consequently, what passengers need is real-time information, directions to emergency points, display panels for transport services, maps indicating local public transport, as well as other useful information. Priorities have to be headed towards optimising access, the information system and facilities.
Current modernisation projects of railway stations are prioritising the implementation of signage components, both for the reconstruction period and permanent, consisting in railway signs, safety signs and parking spaces for operational interfaces and customers. Last but not least, we will have to mention the design elements used (arrows, symbols, colours) that organise and deliver the information content. Also, the size of letters and numbers has to ensure optimal visibility while indicating platforms, directions etc.
Signage is the most visible element in a station and it is definitely essential for its well development. Signage provides essential information for use and navigation inside a system, helping the passenger feel secure and directing them to the entrance and exit points. The information provided guide passengers to the different areas of the railway station and accelerates the process of identifying important points. A proper signage and clear warnings should be displayed to the right distance, while prior warnings should be indicated to the station entrance/exit.
