Siemens to upgrade Swiss BLS rail line with ETCS Level 2

Siemens Mobility and Swiss railway infrastructure operator BLS Netz AG have signed a long-term framework agreement worth over EUR 110 million to modernise signalling infrastructure with European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 2 technology. The contract includes both the delivery of control and safety systems and long-term maintenance, forming the basis for extensive upgrades to regional lines over the next decade.

BLS ETCS level 2: Initial deployment on Bern–Schwarzenburg Line

The first implementation under the agreement will take place on the 17-kilometre Bern–Schwarzenburg line. This project will see the replacement of existing ETCS Level 1 systems with signal-less ETCS Level 2 cab signalling technology. The upgrade enables real-time transmission of track data directly to the driver’s cab, eliminating the need for conventional lineside signals and boosting overall line capacity.

“BLS Netz AG trusts in our expertise to equip its Bern-Schwarzenburg regional line with state-of-the-art ETCS Level 2 technology. We will be integrating and meeting the specific requirements of a line that runs through both urban and rural areas – from optimised level crossing closures to efficient traffic control,” Marc Ludwig, CEO of Siemens Mobility Rail Infrastructure, commented.

Innovative level crossing management

A key challenge in the project is the route’s varied geography, which includes a high number of level crossings in both rural and urban areas. To address this, Siemens will implement a new intelligent level crossing management system that aims to reduce closure times and minimise road traffic disruption.

The first commissioning of the new system is scheduled for 2029. The upgrade will simplify maintenance by reducing the number of interlocking systems required, and it will also prepare the line for potential future expansions.

Framework for future network modernisation

The framework agreement extends beyond the Bern–Schwarzenburg corridor. BLS plans to roll out similar upgrades across other parts of its 424-kilometre network, in line with its European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) implementation plan.

Siemens Mobility is the optimal supplier for us, with a convincing complete solution to set the standard in Switzerland for high-performance regional lines based on ETCS Level 2. The joint project is the foundation for further initiatives by BLS and the industry in Switzerland,” Daniel Pixley, Head of Automation at BLS Netz AG, said.
