Siemens Mobility has announced the appointment of Aglaja Schneider as Joint Chief Executive Officer (co-CEO) for the UK and Ireland, as well as Managing Director for the Rolling Stock and Customer Services Division, effective January 1, 2026.
Aglaja Schneider succeeds Sambit Banerjee, who has decided to retire after a career spanning more than 30 years with the Siemens Group. She joins the UK & Ireland management team, consisting of Rob Morris (Joint CEO UK & Ireland) and Marko Feulner (Chief Financial Officer and Chairman of the Board of Directors UK & Ireland).
A key moment for the UK and Irish rail market
The appointment comes at a time considered strategic for Siemens Mobility, with the development of major rolling stock projects, signaling digitization, and industrial investments in the UK.
Michael Peter, CEO and Managing Director of Siemens Mobility, emphasized the importance of this moment for the UK and Irish markets:
“Aglaja’s appointment comes at a crucial time for the UK and Irish rail industry, with the delivery of the first battery-powered bi-mode trains produced in Goole, the digitization of signaling in Chippenham, and the training of the next generation of rail engineers in Northampton. The UK and Ireland are among our key markets, and with Aglaja’s leadership, alongside Rob and Marko, I am confident that Siemens Mobility is well positioned to transform rail transport in these countries.”
Solid experience in major rail projects
Aglaja Schneider has extensive experience at Siemens Mobility, having previously held the positions of project manager for the Piccadilly line and head of the London Deep Tube Upgrade program. In these roles, she coordinated one of the UK’s most important urban rail programs, which aims to introduce a new generation of subway trains designed to improve capacity, accessibility, and the passenger experience.
“I am delighted to take on the role of co-CEO at a time when the UK rail industry is entering a phase of profound transformation, with the acceleration of rail reform and the bringing together of infrastructure and operations through Great British Railways. It is a time that calls for bold thinking and close collaboration. I will continue to work with our partners and customers to transform rail transport for all,” said Aglaja Schneider.
Major investments in production and technology in the UK
The appointment comes amid a period of sustained growth for Siemens Mobility in the UK. The company recently opened a GBP 6 million Multifunctional Center at the Kings Heath depot in Northampton.
At the same time, Siemens Mobility is continuing its major investments in Rail Village Goole (Yorkshire), where it plans to produce future orders for bi-mode battery trains for the UK market, with total investments potentially reaching GBP 240 million.
A further GBP 100 million is being allocated to the rail technology center in Chippenham, Wiltshire, which is due to open later this year.
