Siemens launches the next generation of Vectron

Siemens Mobility has unveiled the new Vectron X locomotive, the next generation of the Vectron platform, designed for rail freight and passenger transport. The launch took place at the new Rail Service Center in Munich-Allach, where the company also inaugurated expanded capacity for the overhaul and repair of Vectron locomotives.

The new Vectron X is based on the Vectron platform, one of the most important locomotive families in the Siemens Mobility portfolio. According to the company, nearly 3,000 Vectron locomotives have been sold to date.

The Vectron X combines technology already in use with new digital features, software applications, open interfaces for third-party solutions, and a central display in the driver’s cab. Siemens Mobility says this architecture allows the locomotive to evolve over time, depending on customer requirements and operational needs.

For operators, the new locomotive promises simpler operation, greater operational transparency, optimized costs, and more efficient utilization of each vehicle.

The driver’s cab becomes a digital workspace

One of the main new features of the Vectron X is the digital cab concept. Siemens Mobility retains the familiar layout of the Vectron cab, already known to drivers across Europe, but enhances it with an 11.6-inch Smart Screen.

The central screen brings together important apps and information directly in the cab, ranging from operational data and route information to third-party apps available via an App Store.

Customer- and operator-specific applications, currently used by drivers on phones or tablets for mission planning, operational coordination, or internal information, can be displayed directly on the Smart Screen or replicated via TrainPlay.

Siemens Mobility describes the solution as similar to the CarPlay concept, brought to the rail sector for the first time. The goal is to transform the cab into a digital workspace, with faster access to information and simplified processes for operating personnel.

Near-real-time connectivity and predictive maintenance

Vectron X also introduces digital functions for vehicle preparation. The Remote Start function allows the locomotive to be started remotely, which can reduce the time required to prepare for service and increase operational flexibility.

Another key component is near-real-time connectivity. The locomotive can transmit operational data to digital systems, enabling early detection of anomalies, more targeted maintenance measures, and a reduction in unplanned breakdowns. Diagnostic, analysis, and condition monitoring functions provide operators with a clearer picture of the locomotive’s systems. Siemens Mobility states that maintenance can thus shift from a reactive to a proactive model, with higher vehicle availability.

The Vectron X is part of Siemens Xcelerator, the Siemens Group’s open digital platform. The locomotive is integrated into a modular software ecosystem with standardized interfaces that can connect rolling stock, operations, services, and infrastructure.

Siemens: A Scalable Digital Platform

Michael Peter, CEO of Siemens Mobility, stated that the Vectron X marks a new stage in the development of the Vectron platform.

“With the Vectron X locomotive, we continue to evolve as the European market leader, and as part of the Siemens Xcelerator portfolio, we are creating a scalable digital platform that grows alongside our customers’ requirements. Standardized interfaces and software-based functionalities enable more efficient operations throughout the entire lifecycle,” said Michael Peter.

He added that, together with the new service center in Munich-Allach, Siemens Mobility is developing a fully digitized portfolio that connects the operation and maintenance of locomotives for freight and passenger transport.

Andre Rodenbeck, CEO of Rolling Stock at Siemens Mobility, stated that the Vectron X connects “the real and digital worlds” by integrating digital functions directly into the locomotive.

“The Smart Screen, apps, TrainPlay, and near-real-time connectivity simplify operations and make locomotive operations more transparent and significantly more efficient. “The Vectron X combines the proven performance of the Vectron with intelligent software, creating clear added value for operators, engineers, and maintenance teams,” he said.

Expanded Service Center in Munich-Allach

In parallel with the launch of the Vectron X, Siemens Mobility inaugurated a modernized service center in Munich-Allach, one of the company’s key industrial sites in Germany.

With the new facility, the capacity for overhauls and post-accident repairs increases from approximately 25 to up to 80 interventions per year. Siemens Mobility has invested approximately 250 EUR million in the expansion of the Allach site, where around 2,500 employees work.

Elmar Zeiler, CEO of Customer Services at Siemens Mobility, stated that the new center will serve as a center of excellence for the maintenance of Vectron locomotives.

“The new Rail Service Center München-Allach is our center of excellence for Vectron locomotive maintenance—from overhauls to post-accident repairs—and an important new step in expanding our European service network,” he said.

According to Siemens Mobility, customers will benefit from shorter workshop downtime and higher locomotive availability. Solutions such as Railigent X enable condition-based maintenance before the locomotive even arrives at the workshop.

Issues can be detected earlier, spare parts can be planned more quickly, and repairs can be prepared more precisely. These processes are complemented by paperless workflows, digital documentation, and optimized logistics for components.
