RCG expands its Budapest–Curtici TransNET services

The ÖBB Rail Cargo Group (RCG) is expanding its TransNET with a Budapest – Curtici nonstop connection – two key logistics hubs linking Western, Central and Southeastern Europe.

Budapest - Curtici nonstop connection
With one round trip per week, the TransFER Budapest–Curtici connects the BILK container terminal in Budapest – the most important intermodal hub between Western and Southeastern Europe – with the Railport Arad terminal, the gateway to Romania and further on to the Balkans and Turkey. This new connection creates additional attractive opportunities for intermodal transport in the region and beyond.

The TransFER Budapest – Curtici nonstop connection enables the transport of various loading units – from 20-, 30-, 40- and 45-foot containers to swap bodies and cranable trailers. Dangerous goods (RID) can also be transported safely and efficiently. Depending on demand, the frequency may be increased to two round trips per week.

Thanks to the optimal connection to existing routes such as TransFER Budapest–Duisburg, TransFER Budapest–Zeebrugge and TransFER Wels–Vienna–Budapest, customers benefit from continuous transport chains between the economic centres of Western, Central and Southeastern Europe. This results in fewer transshipments, shorter transit times and maximum planning reliability.

This Budapest – Curtici nonstop connection also strengthens the role of Railport Arad as one of the most strategically positioned terminals at the EU’s eastern border. Its direct access to the Romanian rail network and gateway routes towards the Port of Constanța supports smoother east–west flows, particularly for companies relying on efficient access to Black Sea shipping lanes. As a result, the new service enhances the competitiveness of rail freight in corridors previously dominated by road transport.

Moreover, by integrating Budapest and Curtici into a broader network of high-capacity, climate-friendly rail routes, the service contributes to the EU’s long-term decarbonisation goals. Businesses seeking sustainable logistics solutions can shift larger volumes to rail, reducing emissions while maintaining reliable delivery schedules. The nonstop connection therefore not only improves operational efficiency but also supports the environmental transition of freight transport across Central and Southeastern Europe.
