Rheinische Bahnpersonal- und Verkehrsgesellschaft (RBP) has added a Stadler Euro9000 locomotive to its fleet as it celebrates its 10th anniversary, choosing European Loc Pool’s (ELP) Full-Service Leasing model to support its freight operations across Germany.

The Siegburg-based operator, which specialises in freight — including hazardous goods — selected the Euro9000 for its versatility, combining high-power electric operation with a strong diesel module to overcome infrastructure constraints on the German network.
According to Managing Director Thomas Schön, the locomotive’s broad operational scope was a decisive factor: “The locomotive can operate both electrically and in diesel mode. This enables us to offer services that are tailored precisely to our customers’ needs.”
Strategic investment as RBP turns ten
The acquisition aligns with RBP’s growth strategy as it marks a decade of operations. The company emphasises the Euro9000’s relevance in current conditions, where infrastructure challenges necessitate reliable diesel performance, high tractive effort, and cross-border capability.
“This combination convinced us,” Schön notes.
Because RBP does not operate its own ECM or workshops, the Full-Service model was also a major advantage.
Schön highlights that predictable maintenance planning and clearly defined service processes were critical: “That is why a Full-Service contract is crucial for us.” He adds that long-term evaluation will follow: “Ask me again in a year.”
Euro9000: hybrid locomotive for pan-European operation
The Euro9000 is the newest six-axle hybrid multi-system locomotive platform from Stadler, delivering up to 500 kN tractive effort, 1.9 MW diesel power, and up to 9 MW in electric mode. It evolves from Stadler’s EuroDual and Euro4000 families, enabling operators to combine long-distance electric haulage with last-mile diesel operation.
ELP, based in Frauenfeld, Switzerland, focuses on leasing these next-generation hybrid locomotives to rail operators across Europe. Since 2018, it has supported more than 33 operators in five countries with Full-Service Leasing concepts that integrate maintenance, reliability guarantees, and sustainability measures.
Founded in 2015 and employing around 50 staff — including more than 35 experienced locomotive drivers — RBP operates freight and selected passenger services. The company also acts as a certified training and examination centre, helping develop new railway professionals. Its flat hierarchy and fast decision-making processes reflect its roots as a family-run business with strong industry expertise.
