RB Rail launches market consultation for Rail Baltica electrification

The implementation of the Rail Baltica project’s energy subsystem is entering a new phase, after RB Rail AS launched a market consultation for technical expertise services regarding the design of electrification in Latvia and Lithuania. The move prepares the detailed design phase and aims to independently validate technical solutions for the power supply infrastructure.

The procedure aims to organize a future open tender to ensure the review and validation of technical solutions for the electrification system before the start of detailed design activities.

Independent technical validation for the energy subsystem

According to RB Rail, the new procurement will provide independent expertise for the analysis and validation of solutions concerning:

  • traction substations;
  • overhead contact line infrastructure;
  • integration of the energy system into the overall Rail Baltica project.

“The launch of this market consultation is an important step in preparing for the next phase of the Rail Baltica energy subsystem development. With the upcoming procurement for design expertise, we want to ensure that the technical solutions are of high quality, compliant, and technically sound to support the start of detailed design,” said Uģis Sabulis, ENE Program Manager at RB Rail AS.

The consultation allows interested companies to review the preliminary documentation and submit comments on the qualification requirements and technical specifications. The feedback received will be used to adjust the conditions before the official launch of the competition.

The consultation is open until February 27, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. (Riga time).

Continuation of the EUR 1.77 billion contract

The move comes after the signing in 2025 of the EUR 1.77 billion contract for the design and implementation of the Rail Baltica electrification in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania — one of the most important contracts awarded within the project.

The energy subsystem is an essential element of the corridor, ensuring:

  • a secure and stable power supply for trains;
  • interoperability with the European rail network;
  • energy efficiency in passenger and freight transport.

As electrification work progresses in the three Baltic states, RB Rail emphasizes the need to maintain high technical standards and rigorous control of the solutions implemented.

Rail Baltica is a cross-border railway project connecting Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania to the standard European railway network (1,435 mm gauge) via Poland.
