Rail upgrades to disrupt Swiss–Italy travel

Extensive modernisation works by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) on the Simplon axis between Domodossola and Milan will again lead to major disruptions to international rail services in the summer of 2025. The works are expected to significantly impact travel between Switzerland and Italy, with passengers facing longer journey times and reduced train frequencies.

As part of ongoing infrastructure upgrades, the line will be completely closed between Domodossola and Milan during two key periods: from 8 June to 27 July and from 30 August to 13 September 2025. During these times, Trenitalia will operate replacement buses along the route, leading to longer travel times and limited capacity. Travellers are advised to expect at least one additional hour of travel.

The construction works aim to upgrade the line for the four-metre freight corridor and improve overall rail infrastructure, but will result in recurring service reductions on the Simplon axis through to at least summer 2027.

Impact on rail services:

  • Reduced EC Services: During weekdays, only three EuroCity (EC) trains per direction will run on the Basel–Bern–Milan and Geneva–Brig–Milan routes, instead of the usual four. Some trains will terminate at Domodossola. Weekend services will remain unchanged with four EC trains per direction.
  • Line Closures: The Arona–Premosello section will be shut during the two main construction periods. No EC trains will operate between Domodossola and Milan at these times.
  • Swiss-side Disruptions: Construction on the Geneva–Brig line will also affect services, with most Geneva–Brig–Milan EC trains cancelled during the affected dates.

To maintain connectivity, SBB and Trenitalia will provide direct replacement bus services between Geneva and Milan, with a stop in Martigny. These services will operate twice daily in June and September, and three times daily in July. Reservations will be required due to limited seating.

Replacement buses between Domodossola and Milan are already listed in the online timetable. The Geneva–Martigny–Milan bus connections will be available from May 2025. Travellers can also consult the online timetable for alternative travel routes, including via Zurich HB.

Passengers planning to travel to Italy during the summer of 2025 are advised to check timetables in advance and allow for additional journey time.
